For teams that achieve success year after year, it becomes difficult to break school records. However, that is exactly what happened on the night of October 14 at Potomac Falls High School as Keira Van Voorhis put two goals in the back of the net to bring her season total to 23, topping the previous mark of 22 set by Jessie Lee in 2022.
For four years Van Voorhis has been an important member of the team. “From really the first day she stepped on the field as a freshman, completely new to the sport we saw that she had this attitude to be able to score goals,” assistant coach Brad George said.
Van Voorhis has put lots of hard work into breaking the record. “Every year when we would have the summer off season sessions, she would come to those, so she put in the time, ” George explained.
Breaking the record has been a goal for Van Voorhis since the beginning of the season. “It’s been my goal the whole season, so to break it was really relieving for me,” Van Voorhis explained.
“Somone else shot it, I got there and hit the rebound, and no one could really tell if it went in and then we saw the refs blow the whistles, then everyone started cheering,” described Van Voorhis about the record breaking moment.
Head coach Bob Stravinski said, “The moment she broke the record was pure excitement. Once she tied the record, the anticipation grew as to when she would break the record which happened pretty quickly,”George explained, “After the game we honored her, and she had a sign and took pictures of it, but it was pretty exciting because we knew she was getting close for the last two or three games.”
Van Voorhis relied on her teammates to break the record, “This record reflects the growth of the team, not just me individually, because I wouldn’t have this at all if my teammates didn’t work hard to get the ball down the field to me,” she said.
“Keira cares less about the personal accolades and more about the team’s success,” Stravinski noted.” One of the biggest compliments I can give to Keira is that she’s a competitor. Her Field hockey IQ is off the charts, and she’s an extremely coachable player.”
For Keira’s future plans, she is verbally committed to play Division l Lacrosse for University of New Hampshire next Fall.
