Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is one of the best comedy movies I’ve seen in a very long time, and is a great watch for anyone who enjoys fantasy or comedy movies. It’s currently both in theaters and also available on Paramount + and Prime Video. It first released in theaters on March 31st, 2023, and stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant, Chloe Coleman and Daisy Head.

The movie follows Edgin, Holga, Simon, and Doric as they attempt to steal back a priceless relic from a kingdom. As they work towards the relic, a series of horrible plans, and occasionally some touching character moments come into play, combining to create a great comedy movie. My favorite character was definitely Simon, because I found the concept of his character interesting and in no time at all I found myself rooting for him to succeed. I also thought he was hilarious, which is a great bonus.

One of the best parts of the movie was the fact that it felt completely authentic to how my friends and I have always played the game. There was the perfect blend of ridiculous plans and the following consequences, balanced with serious moments of plot, helped establish the stakes of the story. All of the characters are well developed with clear motivations, which makes it really easy to relate to them and want them to succeed.

For life long fans of D&D, the way aspects of the tabletop game were incorporated into the movie without becoming too overbearing was handled really well, and it made those references even funnier than I expected. The world itself felt very well designed and fleshed out, and I would love to see a lot more stories that further explore the world and kingdoms that were established. In addition to that, the way the movie visualized some of the spells from the guidebooks felt completely natural.

The ending was another high point for the movie. There was a clear, definitive ending, the idea of seeing these characters again on another adventure seems entirely possible. In fact, a sequel would be an awesome idea, though there hasn’t been any confirmation of one yet. The world the movie created still has lots of unexplored areas, and I would love to see these characters trample their way through them. N

I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys fantasy movies, the Dungeons and Dragons tabletop game, or is just a fan of comedy movies in general.
