2023 has already had some incredible movie releases and there are even more amazing movies on the way. With new works from critically acclaimed directors such as Christopher Nolan, Wes Anderson and Greta Gerwig included, here’s my ranking of my most anticipated summer movies.

  • Oppenheimer (July 21, 2023)

Christopher Nolan’s new film Oppenheimer is my most anticipated film releasing in 2023. The film follows Cillian Murphy starring as J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb. This movie has one of the most star studded casts in years, including Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh as well as many many others. Considering Nolans track record, (The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar), this film has the potential to be the best of the year, and is my way-too-early pick to win the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars.

  • Asteroid City (June 23, 2023)

Asteroid City is an upcoming sci-fi/comedy film by Wes Anderson, who is one of my favorite filmmakers of all time. The film has an incredible cast, including Hollywood legends such as Tom Hanks, Willem Dafoe, and Bryan Cranston. Also in the cast are Oscar winners Adrien Brody and Tilda Swinton, as well as many other big names. I expect Asteroid City to be one of the biggest hits this summer.

  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (June 2, 2023)

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is widely considered to be one of the greatest superhero films of all time, as well as one of the only non Disney or Pixar films to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Picture over the past decade. Given the success of Into the Spider-Verse, fans should expect Across the Spider-Verse to be one of the best blockbuster films of the year.

  • The Flash (June 16, 2023)

The Flash has been in development for over a decade and has gone through multiple rewrites and directors. On top of all of this, lead actor Ezra Miller’s future in the DCU is up in the air after reports of criminal activity. Despite the film’s controversy in the media, I am still very excited for it due to very positive test screenings and Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman after nearly three decades.

  • Barbie (July 21, 2023)

On the surface, the idea of a Barbie movie sounds like it could be one of the worst movies ever, but Barbie is one of my most anticipated summer releases. Director Greta Gerwig is coming off hot after directing the critically acclaimed films Little Women and Lady Bird, and with Oscar-nominees Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starring as Barbie and Ken respectively, I am looking forward to Barbie very much.
