Dominion is heading into the basketball season with a fun tournament, run by SCA treasurer Jaden Beyer, that brought 20 teams from across the county to raise money for homecoming and pep rallies for SCA.

Beyer needed an idea on how to connect Dominion students and as an athlete a 3v3 tournament came naturally to him. “I thought this would be good to connect with kids around the community and I know a lot of basketball players from different schools, especially those that really just love playing basketball. It’s a lot of fun,.” he said.
The tournament ended with Dominion playing Potomac Falls. The championship game played to 16 points, and it ended with Potomac Falls winning 16-9. The winners got $30 Amazon gift cards and SCA ended up making a $594 profit out of the tournament.
Rules of the tournament were pretty simple, it was with your own rules and there were adults there to watch and maintain a safe game. Mohammed Shakir, a member of the SCA treasury team, explained, “It’s a three on three street ball game. You call your own fouls, first to seven. There’s two winner brackets and then there’s one loser bracket, but you are guaranteed to play three games.”
As basketball season tryouts start on November 10th, this was a great way to get players out there and warm up to get the season started. Varsity boys coach Ryan Williams was there and said, “We are hoping for no injuries, but glad to see the kids are legit working. It is just good to have the community of not only Dominion people, but also Potomac Falls, there are kids from Tuscarora. So it is cool seeing the basketball community in the county come out to support SCA for Dominion.”
Throughout this fundraiser Beyer wanted to express a message that would hopefully lead to a tournament like this to happen in the future again after a large success. Beyer said, “The message we wanted to send was to just have fun. I mean two to three days before tryouts for the season and one last thing in the offseason to have some fun with the players around the county to prepare for the season.”
The tournament started to be set up by filling out a lot of forms surrounding fundraiser requests through ATLAS and SCA had to get those forms approved to be able to open the concession stand, custodial services and gym use. As the treasury chair Beyer had to do most of this himself as it formed around his own idea.
