Pep Rallies seem to be what most of you are looking to improve on. How would you improve pep rallies at Dominion? What are the current problems with pep rallies in your opinion?
My current problems would be timing and the fact that we don’t seek out feedback from the student body pep rallies. Most of the time, we just talk internally with what went wrong, but we don’t ask other people who aren’t in SCA what they think we can improve on. That’s something I’d really like to send out forms for next year. We would probably print out QR codes to Google Forms and put them up or post the Google Form on Schoology pages or Instagram. Getting the students’ opinions matters most, because how else can we improve if we don’t know what we need to improve upon?
Outside of pep rallies, how would you increase school spirit at this school?
We would need to add on more events. Like this year, we’ve been trying to add on more extra events, beyond pep rallies, like the basketball game we just had. There’s so much more stuff we can expand upon. Like tons of other schools have stuff like a spirit stick, and we could implement that next year. You make a stick, decorate it with the themes of your school. Then bring it to all the events with different people, taking turns holding it. It’ll become a tradition. Park View has a big tradition with theirs. I think Tuskegee has one too. There’s tons of specific school traditions that other schools have that we don’t do.
What other issues specifically are you hoping to address as president? How would you solve them? Why do you think the position of president can solve this?
Homecoming and retention at homecoming, because most people who buy tickets and go they’re not staying the whole time. So we need to add more stuff within the dance that gets people to stay. And I guess in order to solve that, we need to add more enticing events and stuff. I know we’ve been brainstorming with stuff like a raffle. Having prizes that will only be passed out at the end of the dance after the doors have already been closed for a while, so you’re required to be there for a longer period of time after the door is closed in order to get the raffle prize.
What makes you the most qualified to be president?
I’ve been in SCA for two years, and before then, I was still trying to be involved with school spirit anyway, I remember my freshman year, back when we did hallway decorating for homecoming, I was the only person in my grade that went every day to set up. So I’ve always tried to be involved with school spirit and participate in pep rally games even before my involvement with SCA. Since then, I’ve been in SCA for the last two years, and I’ve been an officer currently for one. I care about the class and I want it to be successful for the student body.
Many students aren’t very informed on what SCA actually does throughout the year. Why does it matter if someone becomes president? How would you explain this to a freshman?
SCA is a school organization that is constantly planning ways to improve school spirit through themes for different games like basketball and football. We start planning out all of our like, pep rallies and spirit weeks months in advance. Like, as soon as the year starts, we start planning homecoming and the spirit week and pep rallies for that. Then as soon as that’s over, we move to winter, and we’re just continually doing that throughout the year.
Is there anything else that you would like to add?
I don’t believe so.
