On January 8th, Jessica Harris, head of the counseling department, held a presentation where both students and parents learned about the process for applying to scholarships and other helpful tips including how to organize scholarship applications and how to use school links as a resource. The event started at 7:00 pm and lasted till about 7:40 with extra time for questions.
The presentation, titled “Scholarship 101”, went into detail about the steps involved with applying for scholarships, and included the most common mistakes that applicants make. Harris said, “There are tons of scholarship opportunities and we want to educate families on how to find them.”
The main focus was how to strategize and organize when applying for scholarships, while also making sure that students were finding scholarships that fit them best. It was strongly emphasized that students should not only focus on national level scholarships, but also take advantage of local scholarship opportunities. “Talk to us and visit the career center, always ask about opportunities and don’t stop at high school.”
