On January 6th, three Loudoun County teachers were recognized at the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) and were awarded the NCSS Award for Global Understanding. One out of those three was history teacher Jennifer Rodgers.
The Award for Global Understanding is presented in honor of James M. Becker and recognizes a social studies educator who has made significant contributions in helping social studies students increase their understanding and knowledge of the world.
Rodgers not only helped students in the classroom but she also collaborated with other teachers in the county for the Loudoun International Youth Leadership Summit (LIYLS) which happens every year and focuses on global issues and topics. LIYLS includes student exchanges which gives students the opportunity to broaden their perspectives and learn from different students in different countries about their life experiences.
Rodgers said winning this award feels gratifying because she’s put a lot of effort in connecting students with other students globally the past 15 years. Rodgers added, “It feels really good when you’re working towards something really purposeful and you get the recognition.”
According to Rodgers, this award provides legitimacy which helps our school connect with other countries and also helps us receive grants and money, from places like Qatar Foundation International, to continue doing exchange programs.
