On November 12, the coordinator of the Academy of Global Linguistic Studies (AGLS), Chelsea Northman, and principal Dr. John Brewer hosted a webinar to present AGLS and explain what students and families can expect in the future.
Northman stated, the goal of the AGLS webinar was to inform families about what makes a good candidate for AGLS, what AGLS is truly about, and how students can show their interest when applications open on December 1.
AGLS is a humanities-based program that is designed to give students a transformative academic experience that’s centered on cultural immersion, global politics, and diplomacy. AGLS includes two pathways: Global Leadership, which focuses more on diplomacy and international relations with Arabic language studies, and Global Business, which is focused on economics and global markets with Mandarin Chinese language studies.
Both pathways offer more advanced coursework options which include AP, Honors, Dual Enrollment, and more specialized classes such as Opportunities in Global Trade, which is an option for Global Business. The language courses in these two pathways require no prior experience. Students will take these languages every day for the first two years, then shift to only every other day. This program also allows students to engage in guest speaker events, field trips, internships, and potential global travel opportunities during their senior year.
AGLS is seeking students who are curious, more globally aware, open-minded and are strong communicators are strong candidates for this program. For the 2026-2027 year, 100 freshmen are expected to join.
The AGLS program prepares students for college and international careers, especially in diplomacy, global business, and fields that deal with other languages. It also offers opportunities to connect with different embassies and businesses, giving students exposure to the career path they’re interested in. Transportation will be provided through the LCPS schools nearest to a student’s home. Parents are responsible for getting the students to these “hub stops” and back.
The enrollment process for students includes information sessions about further steps after applying start in January, a lottery in February, acceptance notifications in March, and planning throughout the spring and summer.
