Special Abilities Awareness Week: A Special Letter from George Blair
Class of 2013 graduate
Reflecting back on his life story and lessons learned, George Blair (Class of ’13) wrote a powerful letter to Dr. Brewer to be read to the student body during Special Abilities Awareness Week. This was not possible due to Covid so George allowed DHS Press into his home to record his reading of the letter so everyone could hear his important story and message.

George, that was a superb speech. Your message is an inspiration for many others who have a difficult path. You have a wonderful and supportive family who have helped you change the world for the better. The anti-bullying group Alexia created will no doubt be a Godsend to suffering kids in Australia. Your story once again proves that hard work and determination are always more reliable than a quick judgment from a “doctor”. Being an animal lover myself, I am glad that your passion is helping them. I wish you all the luck in the world in your future endeavors.

Dear George, words cannot express how proud I am of you. I have known you since you were a little boy and have watched you face obstacles and overcome each with determination, fortitude, and grace. Dear George, your speech gave many of us profound lessons. The fact that each individual carves and dictates their own life journey, not to be confined by the limitations imposed by others. And here you are, proving so many wrong, to teach us that our faith in God, in ourselves and the faith of others in us, can create a vision that is actualised by hard work and determination. George, Your story was a journey through my memories of what a sweet little boy, teenager and young adult. I remember you and your Mom at the kitchen table when you were young working on your school work. I recall our time in Australia together and cherish those memories. When I saw you the other day driving in the car I was so happy to see that you, with the love and support of family, have gotten yourself to a place you have worked harder to achieve. I’m not surprised by this, while you’ve had obstacles, you have always been able to push through them with determination and grit but always with kindness. You should be so proud of yourself. I certainly am proud of you!

What an experience you had. For you to come out on top, graduating from college with a job in the field you desired, sends a strong message to those that doubted you. Lesson learned: never doubt George Blair! Great speech and keep doing amazing things.

George, what an amazing speech! I cried tears of joy from the start of your speech until the end of it. Thank you for being so brave to share your life and educational journey with us all. Students, parents, teachers, administrators, and all of us can surely benefit from the incredible messages it delivers: understanding, acceptance, respect, kindness, tolerance, perseverance, awareness, and hope. Congratulations to you, your supportive family, and your teachers who believed in you. Also, I commend NOVA for offering you a real job for the first time. You worked really hard, you are obviously very smart, and you deserve a chance like everyone else to secure employment.
