Declining Spirit from Students

Dominion is known for its school spirit from student spirit wear to D-Block hype at games but that spirit has been decreasing lately due to lack of participation in spirit weeks.

A lot of work goes into spirit week decisions and it starts with “ballots that are handed out at the beginning of the year to student council (SCA) students at one of the first meetings,” said SCA president Ranjit Virk.

After those suggestions are placed, the SCA officers “weed out ideas that might not be approved or are not going to get everyone engaged,” said SCA sponsor Mr. Burns. Once the days are decided the officers send them to Dr. Brewer for final approval.

The SCA president said that spirit weeks are planned usually a few weeks, at most a moth before the spirit week actually happens. However, Joel Campos said that he doesn’t participate in some spirit weeks because they are “not communicated well.”

Some also feel that spirit weeks happen too often and it takes away the excitement..

Also, the spirit weeks “just don’t have good days,” said Campos and that it would be “cool if students could vote for their own spirit weeks.”

The most recent spirit week for the Sadie Hawkins dance was one that little to no students participated in. At the beginning of the year there was a petition sent around the school that needed 200 signatures for SCA to be able to coordinate the dance. “We got those 200 signatures but when we were actually holding the dance, only 24 people paid to go and you can’t have a dance for just 24 people,” Virk said.

Burns also said that some students don’t participate for a number of reasons, “One- they simply forget, two- you always have the people who are just anti spirit week, and three- maybe if we have a spirit day that is a little more involved maybe the student can’t afford it.”

There were various announcements from Dr. Brewer and SCA officers on the morning announcements. Also, there were posts outside the cafeteria during lunch shifts for anyone to sign up and pay for their tickets.

The dates for the dance were moved and moved again because the original date was set on the same date as the Academy of Science dance and then it was moved but the continuous snow was making the dates and communication confusing so it was moved one last time and still no one signed up.
