The earthquake that shattered Mexico this past September inspired three Dominion students to raise money for impoverished Latin American countries for their DECA project.

Juniors Daniella Castro and Brian Rodriguez and sophomore Alex Albaladejo all come from a Hispanic background. “We wanted to do something to give back to our community, we were all aware of the help needed in impoverished areas in Latin America,” Albaladejo said.

To help raise money for their cause, the three Titans decided to host a futsal tournament at Dominion this past Saturday. “We chose a futsal tournament because soccer is a huge part of Hispanic culture. We knew we wanted to focus on a Hispanic aspect and soccer fit right into it,” Rodriguez said.

“We chose futsal because we know that soccer is a sport played all around the world and unites many people from different places,” Albaladejo said.

The three raised over $850 for Latin American countries. $500 was raised from the futsal tournament and the other $350 came from Jason Torrico, the speaker during the Hispanic Heritage month assembly.

All of their proceeds will go directly to children and families in Latin America. They also held a shoe drive at the school, where students could donate their gently used shoes to children in Latin America.

“As a group we were extremely happy of our outcome. We collected a large amount and were receiving amazing feedback from players, wanting to play again,” said Castro.
