Volleyball travels to Liberty Christian Academy for the Region Quarterfinals

For the first time in school history the Titan varsity volleyball team won their first regional playoff game. With home court advantage, The Titans dominated the Falcons of Fauquier High School 3-0. They will travel this afternoon to Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Virginia for the regional quarterfinal match.

After defeating the Falcons 25-10 in the first set, the Titans had all the confidence they needed to close out the remaining sets and secure a spot in the regional quarterfinals. Knowing that they were the underdogs in this region tournament, the Titans fought hard in the last two sets winning 25-23 and 26-24.

Senior captain and D1 West Virginia commit Julia Avoletta was instrumental in the team’s success last night. As a setter, Avoletta came up with big kills in crucial moments to push the Titans ahead over the Falcons. To be a part of the only volleyball team in school history to make it to the regional tournament means a lot to Avoletta. “Tonight we showed not only our opponent that we were out to win, but we showed the rest of the teams in our region,” said Avoletta after the match.

Senior captain Abby Brewer’s leadership was evident on the court last night. “It’s our job as captains to make sure we are ready when the whistle blows,” said Brewer. “We played well as a team and when one part of the game was falling, the other parts stepped it up.”

The Titans, now 18-6, will take the four hour bus trip to Lynchburg tomorrow to take on the Liberty Christian bulldogs, who are currently undefeated on the season and have not lost a single set all year.  “We need to come out with an attitude of never letting the ball drop, if we do that it will be a successful night,” Avoletta said. “Our back row needs to be scrappy and ready for everything.”

Conference 21 East Coach of the Year John Senchak knows that the team will have to bring it tonight to compete against the undefeated Bulldogs. “The Titans go on the road knowing they have earned the right to advance, and that confidence will take the floor with this very powerful Titan team,” said Senchak.

Senchak was proud of the team’s historic success last night. “Their years of hard work, the time and effort they have given to the program, and their steadfast commitment to each other is what brought DHS Volleyball to this historic moment.”
