The idea of a staff vs. students basketball game sounds like the perfect way to boost school spirit. Giving students a chance to see their teachers outside of the classroom in a more fun and competitive environment. But scheduling this during the last hours on March 27 right before spring break seems absurd. Is this really the best use of time?
In the perspective of many students, especially the seniors, the answer is a definite no. A large portion of the senior class has early release, meaning they won’t even be in the building to attend this event, automatically excluding a significant group of students who, some of which, have spent four years at Dominion contributing to the school spirit. If anything, the last day before spring break should promote inclusivity. Yet this schedule leaves seniors out of what could have been a moment to remember.
Even for underclassmen, the timing would feel off. The final hours before spring break isn’t just another class period, it’s a transition to a mental break. Students would be getting ready for their time off, teachers are wrapping up lessons, and classes could use that time to finish assignments or plan ahead since teachers would already be getting ready for fourth quarter when we come back.
Engagement, which is what Dominion has been trying to promote, will also be an issue. When an event is placed right before dismissal on the last day before break, attendance becomes inconsistent. Many students are either physically checked out of school that week or just mentally not there. What could have been a spirited assembly just ends up turning into a “It doesn’t matter that much” thought.
Then again, this isn’t really an argument against the event itself, just against the timing. A staff vs. students game does have the potential to bring the school together, the vision is there, it’s just not being executed well. It should be at a time when the majority of students can actually participate and enjoy it. If it did have to be the week of the 27th, moving it to midweek, such as Wednesday morning, would probably have been the better choice. Attendance would be better at that time and students would need more energy so moving the event to this time would help them feel motivated to finish the week strong, successfully changing the event from an inconvenience to something students can actually look forward to.
