Girls Athletics has seen huge success at Dominion, with Lacrosse winning states in 2019, 2021, and 2022. Soccer also won Districts in 2014, 2021, and 2025, and won Regionals and States in 2014 and 2021. However, girls’ spring sports are struggling to fill a roster this season.
Softball is the spring sport that is struggling the most with filling its roster. “I think that female sports at this school generally are declining, and unfortunately, softball just isn’t one of the dominant ones,” said senior softball player Amanda Watanabe.
Watanabe worries about how the smaller roster will affect the team, “Especially on the people that aren’t super into it or haven’t been playing for a long time, so that can get really tough.”
According to Watanabe, softball is one of the hardest sports to recruit for because it is niche.
Softball only had 8 players after tryouts week, but they have had 5 new players since Mr. Wilson emailed, urging students to try out on March 12.
Watanabe hopes that Dominion Softball can survive after she leaves,”The popularity has gone down, so I really hope that it can stay alive.”
Softball Coach Fawna Ruley did not respond to emails regarding the article.
Girls lacrosse also has a much smaller roster this year compared to previous years.
“With a smaller roster, you might see players playing a multitude of positions rather than just being kind of set for one specific position, ” George discusses how a s

maller roster affects the team.
Girls lacrosse has not had a JV team since 2023, and it could cause problems in the future, “It’s such a nice benefit to have that JV program where you can develop younger players to eventually,” said Head Coach Brad George.
“Youth numbers are lower, ever since covid…and were just not getting quite as many[lacrosse players],”said George.
George believes that the Lacrosse team will continue to do well this season. “I see no reason why we should be right up there competing for and winning districts and region titles again, and going to the state tournament again,” He says.
George is confident that Dominion will continue to have a Girls Varsity lacrosse team in the future,”I think we’re always gonna have Freshman every year to replace the graduating seniors, I do think it’s gonna be very hard to try to get a JV team going again if we don’t see a pickup in the numbers.”
A Girls Sport that is not struggling in interest is tennis, “We ended up having 20 people listed for tryouts.. and we have 13 on the roster, so it’s a full roster,” Said brand new Tennis Coach Rachel Dixion.
The Girls Sport that has the most interest is by far girls soccer “We have 40 players rostered. That is more than we ever had. We also made cuts at tryouts,” said Head Coach Micheal Reles.
