With no script and only the audience’s wild ideas to guide them, Blankslate’s cast managed to keep me laughing for the entire show, with their quick-witted humor.
Blankslate just had their last show of the year this Friday and it was a blast. My only regret is that I didn’t come see any of their other shows this school year. A mistake I will quickly correct given the performance I had the privilege of witnessing.
For those out of the loop, Blankslate is an improv comedy group that makes sketches up on the fly based off theatre games. Before the show, you can write answers to a couple of prompts on cards and put them in a hat. Blankslate Director John Maier picks at random out of those hats to make up a sketch. In addition to that, Director Maier zooms around the black box taking suggestions from the audience throughout the show, leading to some crazy scenarios. No show is ever the same, it’s quite literally a blank slate.
My favorite sketch they put on was ‘a group of people at an art museum who think they’re smarter than the tour guide but aren’t.’ Director Maier picked a card out of the hat: “the duality of man.” Immediately, the other three cast members got into comical poses and turned into statues trying to somehow represent the duality of mankind. These strange and sometimes wacky suggestions made Blankslate an unforgettable show and left a lasting impression on me.
For the 2024-2025 school year, Blankslate had a cast of seven, your introduction to them is a series of humorous nicknames that got me giggling out of the gate. The cast includes Clark Maier, Mia Schaefer, Elizabeth Tran, Joshua Hart, Ashlynn Mason, Camryn Skillman, and Elizabeth Leu. Each one of them were great performers that put on an even greater show.
