Why: The Netflix original is inspired by Norman Lear’s 1975, “One Day at a Time”. In the 21st Century version, the viewer follows the life of Penelope, a divorced Army veteran, and her Cuban family. As a single mother, Penelope is raising two teenagers, Elena and Alex. Penelope’s mother, Lydia, played by Rita Moreno, helps her daughter navigate through the ups and downs of life.
The series would be great for those who love sitcoms, but also those who like the feel-good type of TV shows. One Day at a Time also offers viewers an insight on what it is to be Hispanic family living in America, shedding light on modern social issues.
