SCA Officers to be Chosen By Student “Election” Wednesday

With all of the candidates running unopposed, the SCA will hold their election on Wednesday the 13th.

The page for SCA elections on the Dominion website has last been updated in March 2015.

In past years, the SCA has had an assembly at the end of the school year for candidates running for officer positions to make speeches appealing to students for them. There would then be an election in clubhouse following those speeches to elect the following year’s student council officers. Last year there was not an assembly nor an election. This year’s officers are already chosen and the ballots for students will only have one name per position to vote for.

There will be ballots to vote in lunch on Wednesday the 13th after video speeches will be made by the candidates that day during clubhouse. However, there will only be one name on it for each officer position as they are running unopposed, and already have been appointed as officers regardless of votes.

SCA sponsor Mr. Burns said, “Due to circumstances that were out of our hands: our principal wasn’t here for much of the year and I work closely with Brewer with running the elections and he came back really late, so we felt that we couldn’t hold the elections until this year.”

In previous years, the students running for office filled out an application and got 100 signatures to then run for an officer position which they did this year as well. They would make a speech during an assembly in the gym and students would vote on ballots during lunch time which did not happen this year.

This year they had a different approach. “We still made the applications due this year to run at the beginning of this year. We were going to have an election and the voting was going to be on September 18th,” Burns said. They moved the date of the election to Wednesday the 13th.

“We are still going to have speeches, but we are not going to do the assembly speeches; we are going to do clubhouse video speeches due to everyone running unopposed, and we are still going to have ballots so they can see who their officers are. Just like a regular election when someone is running unopposed [students] can still check their name, it just says ‘unopposed’ next to their name,” Burns said.

“I probably approached [Mr. Burns] and said, when I got back it was just before AP and SOL testing, so it was not an appropriate time for us to have SCA campaigns,” Brewer said. After the testing was over it was already too close to the end of the year, so Brewer and Burns agreed with last year’s leadership class to hold elections in the fall.

“There’s no question that what’s happening right now is a consequence of the fact that I was gone for four and a half months and I’m sorry about that,” Brewer, said.

In the future, Brewer said, “what I’d like [Dominion] to do, even this year, is I would like elections to be held during the third quarter so that our rising SCA leadership can begin to plan in the spring for the upcoming year.”
