Dominion Girl’s Cross Country made history last Wednesday, as they secured the program’s first ever team spot in the state meet. After finishing 3rd in the regional meet on November 6 with a score of 76, the team won their spot by virtue of placement.
Last year, the girls team fell short of a regional berth, coming in 5th place in the district meet. “I’m really happy personally and I’m also really proud of all of us because we didn’t even think we’d make it past districts,” Hannah Yonas said. Six runners placed overall, with freshman Caroline Taylor and Lilly Gray’s standout performances placing them in the top 15.
Team bonding has been instrumental to the team’s state berth, with underclassmen playing key roles in the team’s success.“I feel really proud of my team especially because it is a lot of younger girls and I feel like we did such a good job bonding together this season to get where we wanted to be,” Hannah Mottaghi said.
Overall, the team had a score of 76 points with a 23:05 course average, placing them closely behind Woodgrove High School. Dominion found success on the boys side too, with the boys team placing 3rd in the region. Dominion is the region’s only team to have both their girls and boys team qualify for the state meet.
Dominion Boys and Girls will compete in the state meet on November 16, 2024 at Oatlands, Leesburg, VA.
