NFL Free Agency Headlines

NFL+Free+Agency+Headlines

The NFL free agency season officially began on Wednesday, March 14th but this entire week has been filled with agreements and reports from an extremely talented batch of free agents. With the draft looming, this was a big week for teams to get some great acquisitions to work towards the regular season, so here are the best trades and signings with a  grade for each acquisition.

Jarvis Landry, Tyrod Taylor get traded to the Browns

These two players were obtained through trades, but the Browns got two strong pieces to bolster their offensive fire power. Landry is a talented receiver, who has been a solid receiver in the league for the past three seasons. Pairing him with an explosive, down the field threat in Josh Gordon could work very well for Cleveland. One issue with Landry has been his inability to create big plays down the field. So far, he has been a volume reception wide receiver, a guy who has not put up many yards and needs to make plays after the catch, due to his inability to get open past 7 yards downfield. Overall, I think that him being on the field with Josh Gordon can open up a lot for the Browns.

Who’s throwing to him? The Browns went through yet another miserable quarterback year with Deshone Kizer at the helm. Now, likely with QB still in mind for the draft, the Browns have a solid starter until their franchise quarterback is ready. This will be a good opportunity for Taylor to prove himself elsewhere, and for the Browns to remain competitive while their future star waits in the wings.

Kirk Cousins signs with the Vikings

The closer and closer we got to the free agency deadline, the more inevitable it was that Cousins was going to the Vikings. The Vikings signed him to a whopping $84 million dollars over the course of three years. The Vikings are a great team that fell one game short of the Super Bowl with Case Keenum leading them last year. Kirk Cousins and Case Keenum are very similar, and I do think Kirk is the better quarterback who can get the job done on a team with excellent pieces all over. The issue with Cousins throughout his career has been the big games, which he is going to have to win in Minnesota.

Case Keenum signs with the Broncos

As a final candidate in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes, the Broncos got to fall back on Case Keenum. Keenum burst onto the scene last year and really surprised a lot of people. I think he fits well for what the Broncos are trying to do on offense, but can he repeat the success he had last year? I don’t think so.

Bears get some offensive help, sign Allen Robinson and others

After having one of the worst receiver groups in the league last year, the Bears finally got some help at wideout for second year quarterback Mitch Trubisky. First, they signed Allen Robinson, who is a true #1 in the NFL despite recovering from missing the entire season last year. Robinson is a big receiver, with a large catch radius and incredible route-running.

The Bears also addressed needs at backup wide receiver with speedster Taylor Gabriel, and at tight end with Trey Burton.

The Packers, and more importantly Aaron Rodgers, sign dangerous tight end Jimmy Graham

After a frustrating, injury riddled season for the Packers, hopes for a healthy Rodgers-Graham duo is something to be excited about as a Packers fan. Graham’s size and athleticism provides for a great ability to go get the ball, which is just the type of player Rodgers needs at tight end. The Packers still lack the defensive talent to be considered a true Super Bowl contender, but with Aaron Rodgers, anything can happen.

Chiefs sign Sammy Watkins

After moving on from Alex Smith, the Chiefs have full trust in second year quarterback Patrick Mahomes to advance them farther in the playoffs then they have been. This is one of the best signings of the week, as the Chiefs already have Tyreek Hill. The combination of Watkins and Hill outside could be a nightmare to NFL defenses everywhere. Both possess incredible down the field speed and ability to get separation, so as long as Mahomes gets them the ball and Watkins remains healthy, this was a great signing.

Titans sign Malcom Butler and Dion Lewis

The AFC South just got much tougher. The Titans first big move this offseason was signing former Texans DC Mike Vrabel to be their head coach. I thought this was a great higher for the direction of this team; young quarterback, talented defense, and now two serious weapons for both sides of the ball. Butler coming off the debacle that was him being inexplicably benched in this past year’s Super Bowl, despite being healthy. Butler is a great #1 corner in the NFL, and I think he will thrive in Vrabel’s defense.

The Titans also acquired some help for the offensive side of the ball in Dion Lewis. Lewis is a shifty back, who excels at making defenders miss and catching the ball out of the backfield. Both of these signings were dynamic and crucial additions to an already very competitive division.

Cardinals get Sam Bradford

In a surprising move, the Cardinals paid big money for Bradford, who is now getting a 1 year $20 million-dollar deal. The Cardinals join the pool of teams that likely are still going to draft a quarterback to sit behind a starter for an extended period of time. I will say there is a reason Sam Bradford continues to sign large contracts despite consistently getting injured, because he’s very good. Bradford has great accuracy, he sets his feet up well, and has a strong enough arm to make all of the throws. If he remains healthy for the entire season, the Cardinals could be a tough contender in the NFC playoffs.
