Krueger’s College Picks of the Week

Kruegers+College+Picks+of+the+Week

This College Football season kicks off with one of the most loaded opening weekends in the history of the sport. There are Top-25 matchups across the board and many games to start the out-of-conference schedule with historically big programs and primetime matchups amongst some of the best athletes the sport has to offer. Here are all of the games you need to watch and my insight on who I think is going to win this Saturday.

#3 Oklahoma vs. #15 Houston 12:00 pm ABC

Oklahoma is coming off of a playoff appearance and return a majority of their starters, most importantly Baker Mayfield who is my prediction to win the Heisman Trophy this year. Oklahoma plays fast, they play smart, and they run the score up on teams in a hurry. Although this is a problem for most teams, Houston plays the same way, and can get into an old fashioned shootout which is what everyone at home wants to see.

PREDICTION: I feel like Houston will compete, but Oklahoma pulls away late 41-28

#5 LSU vs. Wisconsin 3:30 pm ABC

LSU is coming off one of the stranger seasons in their recent history, as they had hopes to making it into the playoff behind their star running back and 2016 Heisman hopeful Leonard Fournette, but fell short after folding in big games down the stretch of the SEC schedule. Many in the sports world, including those in the LSU football program, thought Les Miles’ head coaching career was going to be over. In a turn of events he was kept at LSU and has playoff expectations with Leonard Fournette returning and a top three recruiting class coming in. Wisconsin has hopes to beat an SEC opponent on opening day for the first time in the past three years. Wisconsin is a consistently great program, but can never really keep up with the recruiting of these bigger SEC and Big Ten schools. The quarterback position has always been a problem for Wisconsin, but it’s going to be who can win the battle up front. Both of these teams like to run the ball, play sound defense, and can win low scoring games

PREDICTION: LSU wins a close one 24-17

#18 Georgia vs. #22 North Carolina 5:30 pm ESPN

This game I feel will be one of the best games of the afternoon that you don’t know about yet. Top-25 matchup, two teams that had roller coaster years but are poised to bounce back. UNC was one really bad call from making it to the PLAYOFF last year and beating #1 ranked Clemson. They do lose their former starting QB but have talent everywhere and can beat teams many different ways. Georgia was going to have a possible SEC championship bid before injuries to star RB Nick Chubb derailed their season. New head coach for Georgia Kirby Smart is taking over for his first season there, high expectations for a talented team. UNC plays a fast west coast offense, while Georgia runs the ball a lot and runs a more pro-like system.

PREDICTION: UNC upsets Georgia 27-24

#20 USC vs. #1 Alabama 8:00 pm ABC

The reigning national champs and the #1 ranked team in the country plays on primetime TV vs the Trojans of USC Saturday, and there are no higher expectations than the ones that are on Alabama. Nothing new, Alabama has won three National Championships in the past five years, strong running backs, NFL sized defenders, and the head coaching of one of the greats Nick Saban defines Alabama football. They have not yet named a starting quarterback, but it never does really matter. Alabama runs the football and out coaches other teams and can beat anyone by doing only that week after week. USC is going to need to put points on the board and stop the Alabama front line.

PREDICTION: Alabama steamrolls USC 28-7
