Cumulative Exams: Beneficial or a Bust?
Dominion High School has opted out of implementing traditional final exams and students are now dependent on their teachers to determine what this mysterious end of the year exam will be.
Many teachers still push for exams and will certainly be giving out tests at the end of the year. However, other teachers less inclined to follow suit will most likely create an alternative to a test, such as a project or class activity.
Although students do not technically have a final exam at the end the year, many individuals will still have to take these tests during a two hour class period on full days of school.
Rather than punishing students by finding a loophole too keep on giving exams without the benefit of half days, Dominion High School and LCPS should honestly just reinstate midterm and final exams, as staying at school for the whole day can cause a loss of concentration and study time for the next cumulative exam.
Additionally, having real midterm and final exams would help Dominion High School students be better prepared to enter college, where final exams are a requirement, not an option.
Long term effects of this decision will surely make themselves evident with time, but for now, students and staff await the week of school where exams, which are technically not supposed to be given out, capture the attention of everyone involved in their implementation.
