On March 18, the World Language Honors Societies held their annual member induction but this year membership looks a bit different. Previously, there was an individual language society for German, French, Latin, and Spanish but starting all languages merged and now act as the World Language Honor Society
The sponsors of each society decided to merge to help communication. “We figured it would be better to have consistent activities and requirements. Therefore keeping our meetings together and our activities together would allow us to be the same throughout the languages [so] that we wouldn’t have Spanish doing something different from French. Our induction ceremony has all languages together anyway,” French Honor Society Sponsor Lara Wooley said.
The merger is expected to be beneficial for students. “The Spanish honor society tends to have a lot of people and then German usually doesn’t have as much. I feel like coming together as one society will bring more inclusion and more ideas,” World Language Honors Society President Kaitlyn Demitz said.
Due to a lack of enrollment, the induction did not include Latin. Students’ induction had them passing by lit candles which symbolized the passing of knowledge from all the past students of the society to help the newcomers.
To join the society, students need to be at least a sophomore in a level three or above in the world language classes as well as perform six hours of service related to a language or culture. For more information stop by room L109 or email Lara Wooley.
