With traditional hamantaschen and cheery decorations, the Jewish Student Union (JSU) celebrated Purim this past Friday. Students stopped by during all lunch shifts to enjoy the triangular pastries filled with apricot jam and learn more about the holiday.
Mrs. Huffman, one of two sponsors of JSU said,“[JSU] wants to let people know that we’re here and to offer support for any Jewish students.”
Purim is a Jewish holiday celebrating when Jewish people in Persia were saved from execution in the 4th or 5th centuries BCE. Haman, an advisor to the Persian king, orchestrated the plan to execute the Jews, but he was stopped by the Jewish Queen Esther, who convinced the king to stop Haman.
JSU President Avery Scott said, “[Purim] teaches about bravery, standing up even if it’s at risk to yourself.”
JSU is planning to meet with other high school JSUs in the county to discuss current issues and to try to grow the unions together. JSU also plans to have an event for the upcoming Jewish holiday of Passover in April. To stay connected follow @dom.jsu on Instagram.
