In her second to last high school basketball game, senior point guard Ahria Mehta broke the school record for total assists in a season. The record was previously held by AJ Johnson with 85 assists during the 2012-13 season.
Mehta started playing basketball in third grade and has since played on local club teams and played on varsity all four years of high school. In her entire high school career, she was a three year captain, had over 800 points, 300 rebounds, 200 steals and 200 rebounds. She relies on her main source of inspiration, “My AAU coach, coach DeMonte taught me everything I know about basketball and has helped me in and outside of the sport,” Mehta said.
The two time First Team All-Dulles District player finished her season with 91 season assists despite missing three games. She missed two games due to the weather cancellations and one from being sick early on in the season, which she accredits with not reaching her personal goal of 100 season assists. On February 18th, the team played Rock Ridge and Mehta broke the school record.
Mehta will be the first player to break a record under the coaching of head girls basketball coach Mike Saunders, “It’s really special to be a part of it and witness. It doesn’t happen a lot,” Saunders said. “Watching her grow through the years and seeing the growth she has made on the floor and off, as a captain has been very nice to see and witness,” Saunders said.
Teammate Regan Myers received the pass that Mehta made to break the record. “I think her breaking the assist record shows that she’s not just a selfish leader. She really likes passing the ball and working with her teammates and making them better,” Myers said.
Next year, Mehta will attend Virginia Tech and plans to join a club basketball team on campus.
