The Medical Science club is a prescription for a healthy dose of curiosity and learning for medical science and healthcare career paths. It’s brand new this year to Dominion and is looking to get students involved in medical science.
“We explore different medical fields through interactive activities, discussions, and guest speakers, while also providing guidance on healthcare-related education and career paths,” said Rebecca Blackburn, President of the Medical Science club.
Their monthly meeting on February 10th, consisted of some complimentary Dunkin Donuts and a lab on phlebotomy, the process of puncturing a vein with a needle to draw blood from the patient, also known as a venipuncture. Two phlebotomy arms were set-up with all the materials a medical professional would use to conduct the procedure. Members took turns practicing drawing blood with the help of the club officers’ guidance.
The Medical Science club meets on a monthly basis before school on Mondays. The meetings are typically from 8:45-9:20 am in room 615. The club alternates between doing a lab activity or having a guest speaker come in to present a topic related to medical science.
At the end of this school year, the club is going on a field trip to the Reston Hospital where you will be able to shadow medical professionals at work. To sign up for the trip or find more information about meetings visit the club’s Instagram page @dhsmediscience.
