Tomorrow night at 7pm in the Black Box, also known as room 708, Titan’s improv group, Blankslate will put on their second performance of the year. Blankslate has been providing humorous fun throughout their four shows every year. Known for their unscripted, laugh-out-loud performances, Blankslate offers students an opportunity to explore their creativity, sharpen their thinking, and connect with others through the art of improvisation.
Blankslate thrives on spontaneity and collaboration, with each topic catered to the “individual strengths of the cast members” as “it is improv, so there’s a lot that’s left up to the moment,” director John Maier said. Maier became director just last year and has so far directed the cast through five performances, one of his favorite moments being right after the first performance of this year, where he felt very confident about upcoming shows as the cast “always exceed expectations.”
With a focus on community, the group welcomes students of all experience levels, creating a supportive environment where everyone’s ideas matter. It’s not just about making people laugh—Blankslate fosters confidence, creativity, and camaraderie among its members. Sophomore Clark Maier was initially drawn to join because of “the comedy aspect, because not all of our theater shows we do are overly funny but Blankslate is. We aren’t trying to be funny, but it’s definitely more consistently funny than rehearsals.”
Another cast member, Joshua Hart, said that it was “really enjoyable and the fact that we have free reign to do whatever we want on stage is a lot of fun.” Hart is a freshman and has only done one show this year, but he’s incredibly excited for the upcoming performances and has high hopes for their show.
Other members include Mia Schaefer, Elizabeth Tran, Elizabeth Leu, and Ashlynn Mason, whose previous performances were described as “incredible. They all know how to take the most random topic and make the most of it, which I think makes a lot of people excited to see their suggestions acted out,” Maier said.
