The Speech and Debate team has seen the view at the top, winning the 2023 AAAA State Championship in Debate. Speech and Debate looks to return to the top, and it starts with their Tuesday and Thursday meetings.
A typical meeting has a “little bit of fun debating like silly topics. Then as we go on, we have people seperate more into what form of debate they want to do,” said four-year member, Sanya Ahluwalia.
The Speech and Debate Team is a group of students interested in argumentation, public speaking, and vast topics they are given the opportunity to debate. The team is coached by Dominion history teacher, Sheryl Gusman and her husband, Larry. Gusman’s fondness for the sport stems from her experience in high school debate. “I think it is such a valuable activity to help students find their voice and do better in the long term in life,” Sheryl Gusman said.
Speech and Debate season starts in October and ends in June, with at least one competition a month. Competitions ramp up to three times a month in March. The team looks forward to furthering their successes at their next tournament Saturday, November 23rd at Rock Ridge.
