As a Senior at Dominion, I am ashamed to say that it took me four years to go to a Blankslate Show. My experience was quite literally a blank slate (pun intended), before I went. After some internet-stalking, courtesy of https://titantheatre.dominionhigh.com/blankslate, I found that it is an improv group that uses popular theater games to entertain audiences from all ages. I imagine that it is pretty difficult to entertain audience members whose ages range from 7-70 for 90 minutes.
Blankslate easily accomplishes that task with topics ranging from George Washington’s cherry tree to a self-help session, where cast members offer advice on the audience member’s problem. With their wide array of topics, their improv games had led every audience member to double over in laughter. Using facial and hand motions to their advantage, the cast led and captivated the audience throughout the entire show. Blankslate Director John Maier’s voice made me feel like I was in a movie, as he bounced around the Black Box and took improv suggestions from every audience member. Their ability to include every audience member in their show, made me feel that I was a cast member.
Blankslate’s cast of six, including Mia Schaefer, Clark Maier, Elizabeth Tran, Elizabeth Leu, Ashlynn Mason, and Joshua Hart, made sure there was never a dull moment during the show; they constantly bounced and fed off of each other’s remarks. My first Blankslate performance and Blankslate’s first performance of the 2024-2025 season exuded my expectations, and left me wanting to become a season-regular. If you are looking for a family-friendly evening of laughter, check out their next show.
