Where did you receive your education?
I went to [the] University of South Carolina in Columbia. I got a bachelor’s degree and also my master’s degree [at the] same school.
What did you get your master’s degree in?
I got my master’s in school counseling.
Have you always worked as a school counselor?
I have worked for the past 25 years. I worked in Alexandria City in Virginia as a high school counselor. There’s only one high school there. It’s called Alexandria City High School that used to be called TC Williams, but they have changed the name to Alexandria City. It has 4,500 students there[and] that actually includes two campuses.
Did you do anything before becoming a counselor?
I actually was a newspaper reporter [a] long, long time ago. It was my first real job. I was a newspaper reporter back when we had real newspapers with ink . It was a small town [with]a weekly newspaper. I really enjoyed doing that. I’ve always loved news and reading about current events.
What made you want to become a counselor?
I did always enjoy feeling like I was helping people. I want[ed] to get into counseling [because] I wanted to help other people that were struggling.
What are your goals for the school year?
I have so much to learn, because everything is different here from the other place I was coming from. So I have a lot to learn, just new systems, and my goal is to be able to help all students here. I know that we start out with the seniors, because that’s the important part of the beginning, but eventually my goal is to be able to work with all students and helping them to succeed.
What do you do in your free time?
I love to hike. I like to read and I love to spend time with my family.
Did you do anything fun or memorable this summer?
I had a great summer. I went to Canada and I went to California, because some of my family is in California. My grandkids are in California, so I went to visit them. Then I went to Santa Cruz, which is also California, and I went to another couple of beaches in California. That was really fun.
