Correction: An earlier version stated there is a $5 fee to watch the powderpuff game but that is incorrect.
Homecoming week is back and full of exciting traditions and brand new activities. Homecoming week will have activities including spirit days, advisory competitions, the powderpuff game, class battle, The Feast, pep rallies, the homecoming parade, football game, and the dance.
SCA Vice President of Events Hila Hakimi explained how SCA has worked to make the spirit days more inclusive and easily accessible, so people don’t have to go out and buy things in order to participate in spirit week, they can just pull it out of their closet.
SCA decided to kick off homecoming week on Thursday September 19th, making the week a full seven days instead of five. The purpose of this was to get everyone more enthusiastic for the traditional week to come by starting off with two spirit days and the first advisory competition.
After a two year hiatus, powderpuff is returning. Powderpuff, a tradition where the junior girls play the senior girls in flag football and the boys are cheerleaders, is on Friday, September 27, the same day as The Feast and the homecoming football game. At 4:15, everyone who wants to watch powderpuff will be released to the main field. Hakimi explained it is on the same day as The Feast and the homecoming football game so people will be more likely to participate in all three events.
SCA Sponsor Kristi Riley explained that the Feast, similar to a tailgate, will have Chick-fil-A, Babu Ji, and Bruster’s ice cream available. Anyone who purchases a homecoming ticket will have a voucher for a $10 meal from any of the food trucks.
After The Feast is the homecoming game, which is certainly more than a competition. Hakimi explained that the dance team and band perform, and SCA Vice President of Outreach Campbell Resnick described the game as pure joy and that no matter the outcome of the game, it’s a lot of fun.
The theme for the homecoming dance this year is Glowcoming. “The lighting is going to be key for homecoming this year, and the goal is to make the gym not even look like a gym,” Riley said. She also added the goal is “to give people an environment to make them not remember they’re in school, and to just enjoy the dance and enjoy being with their friends.”
A new change this year is that instead of mini pep rallies, there will be advisory competitions. The top advisories will compete in the Pep Rally on Friday 27. Participating in spirit days also increases your advisory’s chance to win a prize.
This year, there will be a new DJ from Greenfield Productions. Riley explained that the DJ has a lot of experience in Loudoun County Public Schools, so they will better understand Dominion’s culture and will be much more energetic than the previous DJ.
Students will be able to send in song suggestions for the homecoming dance using a QR code around the school. Because DJs nearly always have the clean versions of songs, there are few limits to what can be played. “We want to play music that you like,” Riley said.
On Tuesday, September 24, people from each class will participate in the Class Battle volleyball tournament in the main gym. Any non varsity athlete can sign up to play using one of the QR codes that can be found around the school or on the SCA Instagram.
The spirit dress up days are Soccer mom vs BBQ dad- Thursday 19, Jersey Day- Friday 20, Pajama Day- Monday 23, Class Color Day- Tuesday 24, Anything But a Backpack Day- Wednesday 25, Adam Sandler Day- Thursday 26, and Black, Silver, and White Day- Friday 27.
Riley summed up the importance of getting involved in homecoming by explaining that “high school can be tough, and we need to let loose a little bit. Spirit week is the time to do that. To have fun and be together and take these memories with you for the rest of your life.”
For those who need financial support to attend the homecoming dance and game, there are fee waiver forms people can get from the main office. Once filled out, they should be brought to SCA sponsor Kristi Riley and their ticket is taken care of.
