How long have you been teaching? This is my first year teaching.
What did you do before you became a teacher? I was an engineer, a network engineer for the government. I ran a couple of the broadband network shops.
What made you want to become a teacher? I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. In school, I went into [the] engineering track. I wanted to chase the money but I’ve always wanted to teach. I’ve tutored a lot of kids in my neighborhood for the last several years and I’ve always wanted to do this. I pursued this [and] went to school and got a teaching certificate [and] now I’m teaching.
What classes do you teach? I’m teaching math right now; I’m just teaching Geometry and Algebra Two. I’m enjoying that and I’m hoping to expand as I go further.
How has your first year at Dominion gone ? It’s going pretty well; I’m enjoying it. It’s a very supportive administration, a very supportive staff on the math side [and] I’ve learned a lot. I think I’ve learned as much as I’ve taught this year. I’m learning how to manage the classrooms more and just demand more of my students, but it’s been a good year.
What problems have you faced in your first year here? I think the biggest problems are just understanding classroom management and challenging students at a good level. I’ve learned quite a bit that way and I’m really looking forward to next year.
What made you decide to teach at Dominion? I’ve always liked Dominion. I really respect Dr. Brewer, both my children graduated from here, and it’s a local school and I want[ed] to be apart of the community.
What has been your favorite part of being a Titan? I think my favorite part is just the atmosphere here and interacting with the kids and helping people learn.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not in the classroom? I like to run.
Do you have any summer plans? Yeah, this summer, I want to hike on the Appalachian Trail for a while. I’m going to do probably a couple of weeks of hiking and I’m also going to go to the beach for a week and then I’ll do some other little minor hikes.
