Spring Sports: Titans Look To Build On Last Year’s Successes
With three defending state title teams in the spring, it looks to be a great one again for Titans.
Dominion takes to the field for the spring season with 3 State Championships to defend. We reached out to coaches to find out what to expect for the season ahead.
Softball
Coach: Fawna Ruley
Key Returners: Taylor Suchy, Shayla Moore, Shae Orndorff, Kylee Rosenberger (Seniors), Taryn Spearman Pitcher and Short stop Naomi Ruley (Sophomores)
Key Losses: Toni Ruley, Mia Lemongelli, Allie Berreth
What to expect and keys to a successful season: Coach Fawna Ruley describes her team as having an underdog mentality and looks forward to seeing growth within underclassmen and seniors taking more of a leadership role. She says the keys to a successful season are to continue to compete and trust one another so they can improve as a team.
Girls Lacrosse
Coach: Diane Traynor
Key Returners: Molly Battaglia, Jamie Lee (Attack), Ashlyn Hickey, Lindsey Wright (Midfield), Cat Mills (Defense), and Caelan McLoughlin (Goalie)
Key Losses: Jessi Montgomery, Maria Salamone, Tierney Schaible and Liesi Damm
What to expect and keys to a successful season: “You can expect our team to do what we always have – take one game at a time and push to get better every time we take the field. We put team first and know that while we have a lot of talent, talent only wins when you execute and play together as a team. We are excited to play some new opponents this year adding Yorktown and Langley to our schedule. These teams will push us and make us better. We play a fast, high-skilled lacrosse game and it’s very fun to watch us on the field,” coach Traynor said.
Boys Soccer
Coach: Jhon Rosado
Key Returners: Lucas Caldas (FWD), Dimas Portillas (FWD), Hasni Bachir-Bouiadrja (FWD)
Key Losses: Entire defense from last year and a large part of the mid field.
What to expect and keys to a successful season: “Trust and Confidence in one another. There are a lot of brand new players,” coach Rosado said.
Boys Tennis
Coach: Matt Kikel
Key Returners: 2 seeded players from last year’s district team
Key Losses: 4 seeded players (seniors)
What to expect and keys to a successful season: “This year, we are in the process of grooming towards future success. Our goal this season is not to dwell on past successes, but rather to build upon current and future successes. We have a number of new faces and some raw talent that I am looking forward to seeing improve throughout the season. Our biggest challenge will be the concept of facing each opponent only once. In past seasons, we shared two contests with district opponents, one home and one away. This season will hold 12 matches and one scrimmage, weather permitting. Still, we will only face each opponent one time. So each contest will mean that much more, in determining seeding for the District Tournament,” coach Kikel said.
Girls Tennis
Coach: Sebastian Chirila
Key Returners: “In the Spring of 2020, the Dominion girls’ tennis team had four seniors out of thirteen players. Due to the virus, all Spring sports were canceled. Last year, we had only two seniors, so we are blessed to have seven girls returning to the team. It is hard to pinpoint which returning player is the key to our team, because we are a family, we support each other all year long, and we challenge each other to become better every day. One key returner that I would like to highlight is the team spirit. We are back together working hard every practice.”
Key Losses: “Last year we lost to Loudoun County and Loudoun Valley, which were higher ranked than us. I think the first loss of the season, which was to Loudoun Valley, was a key loss, because it motivated us to work harder in practice.”
What to expect and keys to a successful season: “We should expect a great season, we should expect that the Titan players will play hard every match, leaving all of it on the court. The key to our season is to challenge ourselves to grow every practice and every match,” coach Chirila said.
Boys Outdoor Track
Coach: Jon Wesoky
Key Returners:Amir Aougab (distance), Cyrus Williams (sprints), Arun Mantena (jumps), Mike Tran (Hurdles), Matthew Want and Malik Kurtz (middle distance)
Key Losses: Nick Sibley, Joseph Vilorio, Denny Luu, Logan Heinze, Jacob Chang, Ian Slebrch
What to expect and keys to a successful season: “We are returning a lot of talent and are well positioned to be one of the better teams in the district and region and get a big group to States,” coach Wesoky said.
Girls Outdoor Track
Coach: Jon Wesoky
Key Returners:Kyra Lim and Keara Spruill (sprints), Rylie Strauss (jumps and hurdles), Bree Summers (throws),
Key Losses: Natalie Sandridge, Anusha Jain, Camille Hall
What to expect and keys to a successful season: “We have a lot of first time athletes so the key to success is getting the most out of the newcomers. We lost a lot of our scoring in the senior class last year for both boys and girls but we have a large program and never really should be in rebuild mode,” coach Wesoky said.
