Looking Ahead To Gaming In 2022
With a brand new year upon us, it’s also a big new year for gaming. A lot of releases are set for this year, and the anticipation for them is greater than ever. Here are some of the biggest upcoming titles that everyone’s talking about:
Horizon: Forbidden West (Feb. 18th, Playstation)
A recently introduced Playstation franchise, Horizon: Forbidden West will serve as the sequel to Horizon: Zero Dawn, which came to Playstation 4 in 2017. It was praised by many for the open-world RPG elements which brought a fresh new genre to Playstation. The mix between tribal humans and mechanized machine-animals made for a taste of both past and future worlds.
The sequel will have brand new ways to explore, introducing underwater exploration in lakes and oceans. Players will also be able to explore real-world landmarks in-game, such as Yosemite Valley and San Francisco, now left in ruins from a time long ago. Of course, PS5 features will surely make the game more immersive. Horizon: Forbidden West will come exclusively to Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 on February 18th.
Elden Ring (Feb. 25th, Playstation + Xbox)
This is yet another RPG making its way as a hit release. A lot of anticipation has surrounded this game, and for good reason—many compare this new open-world game to the popular RPG Dark Souls, as they play similarly with combat and setting.
Traveling on horseback, players can explore a vast fantasy world that offers thrilling combat with mystical weapons, and a compelling story that surrounds the concept of the Elden Ring. This may be a new game series that has high hopes for praise. Elden Ring will be released February 25th on almost all platforms, coming to PS4 and 5, along with Xbox One/Xbox Series X and PC.
Gran Turismo 7 (March 4th, Playstation)
For the fans of racing games out there, Gran Turismo 7 is revving up for its release. As the eighth entry in the series, Gran Turismo will have returning features from past games that many have longed for, including a full campaign mode, beloved original tracks returning, and simulated weather are just some of the many aspects that make this entry the biggest one yet.
Fans will also be able to have a grand immersive experience with PS5’s haptic feedback, feeling the motor vibrate right at the palm of their hands. Raytracing and 60FPS will allow for stunning graphics that will make it appear even more real. Gran Turismo 7 will be released on March 4th this year, exclusively to Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.
Tunic (March 16th, Xbox)
This is an adorable new indie game also on the horizon for Xbox. Tunic lets you play as a fox exploring a vast geometric world full of dungeons and puzzles. Playing similar to The Legend of Zelda, this adventure is full of classic RPG elements along with quickly timed combat.
The world is filled with a language of its own, which adds to the mystery of the artifacts and bosses you encounter along the way. Nevertheless, the charming atmosphere will leave players drawn to adventure. Tunic will be released March 16th exclusively on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
God of War: Ragnarok (2022, Playstation)
One of Sony’s most beloved franchises on Playstation, God of War: Ragnarok is the upcoming sequel to God of War, which came out in 2018. Being the proud winner of 2018’s Game of the Year award, it’s no surprise that the overwhelming success of this reboot warranted a sequel.
The story will follow the actual events of Ragnarok depicted in Norse mythology, with a much older Kratos and Atreus returning as the protagonists. From the reveal trailer shown at the State of Play livestream in September, the game will have the same setting in Midgard (aka Earth), along with sailing to new locations. The game will release sometime in 2022, coming exclusively to Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel (2022, Nintendo)
Many are also excited for the unnamed sequel to one of Nintendo’s biggest hits, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This game made history in gaming by defining the open-world genre for future generations, and many new open-world games are referred to as a “Breath of the Wild clone.” Fans got to explore the land of Hyrule in a fresh new way, and it stands as one of the best-sellers on Nintendo Switch.
Not much is known about the sequel apart from a short teaser, but we can assume that along with returning to the old map, players will get to explore brand new areas and enrich themselves in a new story following the events of the first game. The unnamed sequel will release sometime in 2022, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
