Vecinos Unidos, translating to ‘Neighbors United’, is committed to helping students overcome academic achievement gaps by assisting children in grades one through six with school. Focusing on math, reading, and writing, High school volunteers aged 16 and older can earn volunteer hours by working with the students one on one as a part of the tutoring crew. Tutors work with students between hours 4:30 and 6:00 pm with the work in the student’s cubby, which has been tailored to their academic needs. Vecinos Unidos won’t sign volunteer hours until a High School volunteer has worked 12 sessions. “That helps us to ensure that our volunteers are reliable and dedicated,” said Volunteer Coordinator Bretny Khamphavong. According to Khamphavong, last year Vecinos Unidos functioned through zoom due to covid, but is now back in person for two days a week (Monday and Wednesday) and looking for more volunteers to open back up to the full Monday through Thursday schedule.
