Foreign Language Quarterly Competitions
“The Clash of the Titans” is making a comeback for the foreign language clubs. Fun, quarterly competitions allow foreign language club students to learn about other foreign languages and the culture associated with those languages.
The portions of The Clash include a scavenger hunt, building, hockey or sport, and food cooking competitions, the competitions are split up quarterly and the club with the most points at the end of the year is the winner of “The Clash of the Titans.”
All of the foreign language clubs have won in the past and the most recent win was by the French club in 2012
The Latin club mainly celebrates Roman culture and how they see it in the world around them.
The Latin club; goes around the hallways in togas with a drum and declares war on all the other foreign language clubs. This is how the Clash begins.
The Latin club plays games and music, in addition to the food provided in meetings. The club goes to the annual Latin convention in November in Richmond, VA, where up to 2000 students come.
Anyone can join the Latin club and the meetings are on Thursday mornings and afternoons. The Spanish language club celebrates “The Day of the Dead”, which is a holiday in Spanish culture on November 1st and 2nd. The Spanish club watches a video about this holiday.
“It’s cool to see kids be excited about the Spanish club and it’s also kind of neat to see them be competitive,” Davis said. Davis’ favorite part of the competition is the scavenger hunt.
Catherine Edgington is the sponsor of the German club. The German club has won parts of Clash before and they always make sure they try to make sure they have a lot of participation from students in order to compete.
Edgington’s favorite part of Clash is the scavenger hunt because they usually do this with summit students. The German club receives T-shirts to raise their spirits.
The German club is hosting the Loudoun County Public Schools wide Niklaus fest, which is a festival that includes ginger bread houses, the performance of Dominion High School’s chorus, and a lot of other entertainment. The German club also sells advent calendars.
Kathy Mcdermott is the sponsor for the French club. The French club gets Tee shirts to show their club spirit and they usually are in the homecoming parade.
The French club won Clash in 2012 and they got the trophy. The sections of the competition they won were floor hockey and food making.
“It’s just sort of fun to see all the foreign language students come out and be excited and get competitive with each other.” Mcdermott said.
For the food making portion of the competition, each club would make a dish relating to their language and would be judged on how good it was. This part of the competition has been done with the Summit students who are the students that visit our school from other countries.
For the building portion of the competition, each club makes a structure or building based on their foreign language’s culture.
The scavenger hunt is the favorite of most of the sponsors and it is fun for the students as well. The scavenger hunt starts off with students getting a list of tasks and they have to complete most of these tasks to win. Students must use a video camera to take pictures along the way to provide proof that they won.
