An Early Homecoming

SCA raced to prepare for the early homecoming.

In past years, SCA presidents have been elected months before homecoming, usually towards the end of the preceding May, giving them plenty of time to prepare for the event.  However, because the campaigns were not being run according to the rules, and because the SCA wanted to make their expectations for the candidates clear, the decision was made to postpone last year’s presidential elections until this year, and, when combined with a homecoming date that’s much earlier than last year’s, SCA’s time to prepare has been drastically shortened.

Last year, homecoming week was held from October 22-26, with the dance being held on Saturday the 27th. This year, it is taking place almost a month earlier, with all homecoming events taking place during the week of September 30th.

This year’s homecoming date was chosen last spring, far before the SCA elections in May, and the decision-making relied almost entirely on the football schedule, with the events being planned around a game that had the strong likelihood of winning, so that when past graduates come together to watch the game, we can win and boost the community’s morale.

Despite all of this, our new SCA president, Cedra Brown, didn’t seem intimidated whatsoever by the small amount of planning time she had, and said the assistance of the two vice presidents has been key in moving the planning of the event swiftly along.

“The planning is much more organized this year,” Brown said. “We have set deadlines for everything and are focusing almost entirely on homecoming.”

Kelly Malloy, SCA Vice President of Public Relations, admitted to them putting “less effort” into their other activities because of their hectic schedule.

“We feel rushed because of everything that’s going on and we’re very busy,” said Maggie Low, SCA Vice President of Community Service, “though all of the other officers, like Zoo Zoo and Alex, have stepped up and have been very helpful.”

Andrea Relator, Dominion’s SCA sponsor, said this year’s planning has been so organized because of their use of Vision to look at the notes from the planning of last year’s event.
