Week 5: MLB Power Rankings

Week+5%3A+MLB+Power+Rankings

Mookie Betts is already making an early run for AL MVP and Bryce Harper is putting up mean numbers in the 1 hole. Teams like Nationals and Braves are hot as they are both on 5 game win streaks, and teams like the Reds and Orioles are still horrible.

  1. (-) Boston Red Sox (22-9)- I just can not see the Red Sox slowing down until teams stop Mookie Betts. Until then, the Red Sox are the most dangerous team in baseball. They are also the only team with single digit losses left.
  2. (-) Arizona Diamondbacks (21-10)- Week in and week out the Dbacks continue to impress me. They are 5-3 over their last 8 and have held teams to 3 runs or less in 5 of their last 8.
  3. (-) Houston Astros (20-13)- They are currently on a 3 game losing streak to the Yankees and are 3-4 in their last 7. What is really bad is that they were shut out twice in the last 3 days.
  4. (+3) New York Yankees (21-10)- The Yankees are enjoying quite the streak right now. They are 12-1 in their last 13 and their bats have came alive. In 6 of their last 8 games they have scored 4 or more runs.
  5. (+1) Los Angeles Angels (19-12)- They were swept by theYankees, but then swept the Orioles. Angeles have bats. I know it is the Orioles, but they have scored double digit runs in back to back games now.
  6. (-2) Milwaukee Brewers (19-13)- A 4 game sweep to the CUbs hurts their case of being an elite team, but then again number don’t lie. They are 11-4 in their last 15. With players like Christian Yelich back from injury, the Brewers are a quality team.
  7. (+10) Atlanta Braves (19-11)-The youngsters Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr. have kick started the Braves offense. They have scored 7 or more runs in 4 of their last 7 games.
  8. (+6) Seattle Mariners (18-12)- The Mariners have looked all around complete so far this season. They are currently riding impressive series wins over the Indians and A’s.
  9. (-4) New York Mets (17-12)- The one good thing from the Mets week was they said goodbye to Matt Harvey. Other than that it was not very good.
  • (-2) St. Louis Cardinals (16-12)- The Cardinals had a little bit of a slip up as they got swept by the Pirates. They have currently taken the first two games of the four games series against the Cubs.
  1. (-2) Chicago Cubs (16-12)- The Cubs still haven’t quite found their stride yet, but are still keeping up with the rest of the NL central. Their bats have gone silent recently, because they have been held to 3 runs or less for 7 straight games. Good thing their pitching has been top class keeping them in all their games over that stretch.
  2. (-1) Pittsburgh Pirates (17-15)- The Pirates are now the 3rd team listed in a row since the Cards at the 9 spot. This just goes to show how tight this division is of now. The Pirates started red hot and have really cooled off. They got swept by the Nats who have had a horrible start to the season and now head to Milwaukee to try to get back on a hot streak.
  3. (-) Philadelphia Phillies(17-13)-The Phillies are 1-4 in their last 5 and their bats are struggling. They have been held to 1 run in 3 of their last 5 games.
  4. (-2) Cleveland Indians (17-14)- Pitching struggles are hurting the Indians. They have given up 4 or more runs in 7 straight games. It’s a good thing that the AL central is weak if you are an Indians fans.
  5. (-) Toronto Blue Jays (18-14)- They were on quite the skid as they had lost 4 straight, but since have turned it around as they have won 3 of their last 4.
  6. (+4) San Francisco Giants (16-15)- The Giants are on quite the tear as they have series wins over the Nats and Dodgers (swept the Dodgers). They are 7-2 over their last 9 games and are finally back over .500.
  7. (-1) Washington Nationals (16-16)- The Nats are on an impressive 5 game win streak and have come alive since moving Bryce Harper to the lead off slot.
  8. (-) Colorado Rockies (17-15)- It really hurts to lose a series to the Marlins. They did turn it around with an impressive series win over the Cubs as their pitching was top tier. They held the Cubs to 3 runs or less in all 3 of their games.
  9. (-9) Los Angeles Dodgers (14-17)- It feels weird to see the Dodgers so low in the rankings, but until they can get over .500 they are going to stay where they are. A season ending injury to Corey Seager hurts them even more as they look to try to turn their season around.
  10. (-1) Oakland Athletics (15-16)- The A’s have what it takes to compete for a playoff spot. Recently their bats have gone silent has they scored a total 7 runs in three games against the Mariners. On the other hand their pitching has been extremely solid for them.
  11. (+3) Tampa Bay Rays (13-16)- This is the 2nd week in a row where the Rays have jumped up 4 spots in the rankings. Heading into the Detroit series the Rays were 4-1 in their last 5 (then lost a series to the Tigers). If the Rays can keep it up they could enter into the middle third of the rankings next week.
  12. (-) Detroit Tigers (13-17)- A series loss to the Orioles does not feel good. It hurts even more when you give up 5 or more runs in all three games to one of, if not the worst offense in baseball.
  13. (-) Texas Rangers (13-20)- There is only one thing to say about the Rangers. Injuries. That is their problem.
  14. (-1) Minnesota Twins (10-17)- 2-12. 2-12. 2-12 in their last 14 games! They also lost a series to the Reds over that stretch…
  15. (+3) Miami Marlins (11-19)- We see you Miami with series wins over the Dodgers, Rockies, and Phillies. In all seriousness, well done Miami.
  16. (-1) San Diego Padres (11-21)- It frustrates me every week having to put the Padres so low. They have quality players in Christian Villanueva, Eric Hosmer, and Freddy Galvis.
  17. (-) Chicago White Sox (9-20)- They are 1-5 in their last 6 and continue to struggle. On the bright side they are generating runs. They have scored 4 or more runs in 3 of their last 5 games.
  18. (+1) Kansas City Royals (9-22)- Pitching struggles. They have given up 4 or more runs for 6 straight games now.
  19. (-3) Baltimore Orioles (8-23)- Orioles pitching is horrendous. You know your pitching is bad when you still have Chris Tillman in your rotation. They are generating offense though. They have scored 5 or more runs in 5 of their last 7 games.
  20. (-) Cincinnati Reds (7-24)- 2 wins against the Braves and a series win against the Twins. It is looking better Cinci I’ll give you that.
