Special Abilities Week at Dominion High School

As Dominion knows, this week is Special Abilities Week where we celebrate those who are different. the reason behind this week is, “To bring awareness and understanding” Mrs. Chandler said. The school also knows there was a snow day on Monday, so the question is, how is it affecting the week? Mrs. Chandler said, “The kickoff was postponed to Tuesday,” so mostly everything will still go as planned.

Every year a different week is chosen. “We looked at the master calendar with Dr. Brewer and we chose a week that would allow us to have the most freedom,” Chandler said, “We try to choose activities that will expose the general population to what it’s like to have special needs.”

Speakers are chosen every year and this year, Dominion heard from Brett Eastburn.”We chose [him] because he was here in 2013 and he had such an impact on the students at that time, we wanted our current students to have the same opportunity” Chandler said. The activities differ every year, “We try to mix it up to provide variety and to include different groups,” Chandler said. The message is, “embrace everyone. I think this year we have so many great events planned and more people are involved than ever before. I think the week [was] great” Chandler said.
