Baseball Off-Season Practices

There have been lots of questions surrounding the rules of off-season practices this school year. Offseason baseball practices have been running for 2 hours to 2 and a half hours which is much longer than many other team’s offseason workouts. No set amount of time is stated for how long workouts can go in the VHSL rule book, but it is left up to the discretion of the athletic director.

“On Tuesdays and Thursdays practices have been 4:15-6:30,” sophomore, Jack Kriesel said. Matthew Turk, another sophomore and member of Titan Baseball, said “Practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays run from after school to 6:30 and sometimes til 7:30”.

“Conditioning Mondays and Wednesdays til 5:30-5:45 and practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays right after school until 6:30ish and we have been doing that for about 8 weeks,” stated Mr. Nations a substitute teacher at Dominion and baseball coach for Titan Baseball. “I have never seen a practice go three hours this season,” Nations said.

“Sports are allowed 20 offseason training sessions in the fall, winter, spring and an additional 15 in the summer,” Mr. Fleming said. “There is no rule saying this is how long you can and cannot practice. If it becomes an excessive amount that is my job to step in and say no.”

“[The practices] are really good, it helps the team get stronger and learn plays before the season starts. It’s good so we can get right into it and it helps with team chemistry,” Turk said. Kriesel stated, “I feel like the length of the practices on Tuesday and Thursday were a bit long, and I think we should have 2 or 3 practices a week, not 4.”

“I cannot stress enough how important it is all optional,” Mr. Fleming stated. “It does not jeopardize their ability to make the team and does not affect their ability to tryout.”
