The two candidates of the Virginia’s governor race are Republican Ed Gillespie, and Democrat Ralph Northam. This is an extremely close race and is important for all citizens of Virginia to pay attention. On Tuesday, November 7th there will be a new governor in the office and it will either be Ed Gillespie or Ralph Northam.

Ed Gillespie

Background:

Ed Gillespie is the Republican candidate for the Virginia governor’s race. Gillespie is a former chair of the National Republican Committee and spent time as counselor to former president George W. Bush for almost two years. This also isn’t Gillespie’s first trip into Virginia politics. In 2014 he nearly defeated Senator Mark Warner. Gillespie has also been endorsed by President Donald Trump, but Gillespie hasn’t totally embraced the president and his politics on the campaign trail.

Stance on College Education:

Gillespie also plans to cut college expenses and make college more affordable with reforms and changes to the system. He also plans on focusing of improvement in the K-12 education system. Gillespie also plans on advancing the quality of public charter schools in Virginia. Gillespie hasn’t made his stance on vouchers clear yet, when asked about them he commented “be a brick wall against any effort to take away resources from our students and put them in the hands of unaccountable, private organizations,”.

Ralph Northam

Background:

Ralph Northam, lieutenant governor of Virginia is the candidate of the Democratic party running for Virginia governor. Northam has also received a lot of support from the Democratic party seeing support from former President Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton. Northam has pledged to continue many of the policies of current term-limited Governor, Terry Mcauliffe. A few of Northam’s main policies that he supports are support for greater gun control and abortion rights.

Stance on College Education:

Northam plans to cut college costs for all Virginia students, he wants to cut down on the student debt and make college more affordable. Northam also wants to revise the SOLs, attracting, retaining, and supporting teachers, and overall he wants a quality education for all students.

This race is important for the students of Dominion as well as the rest of Virginia, because this will be significant for Virginia policies and politics. This person will also be our governor and in control for the next four years. This is a huge opportunity for people to get involved and voice their opinion in local politics which have slowly been losing attendance and votes.
