Netflix Pick: Freaks and Geeks
Freaks and Geeks is a teen drama and comedy that came out in 1999 and had a tragically short lifespan of one season which ended in 2000. The 18 episodes it had were about the lives of teenagers in the 1980s and their struggles as they tried to determine which group to belong to. There were more than just the freaks and geeks groups to be part of such as jocks and popular kids.
It follows Lindsey Weir and her desire to leave her geek life and become a freak but she realizes that there are more to people than the labels they accumulate in high school. It shows the personalities of the teenagers and adults of the show and how many of them struggle in the same ways. It has all of the teenage struggles of school, friends, and parties but it also goes deeper into the family lives of some of the characters.
Even with only one season, it captured the essence of many teenage struggles throughout high school and created an entertaining way of showing how they grew into the adults they would become. It’s one of the shows where you become attached to the characters and want to be in their world. At some points, you want to be a freak like Daniel, Ken, and Nick but others you want to be a geek like Sam, Bill, and Neal.
The show had many well-known actors many of them in their first roles such as freaks like James Franco (Daniel), Seth Rogen (Ken), Jason Segel (Nick), and Linda Cardellini (Lindsey) and geeks like Martin Starr (Bill), John Francis Daley (Sam), and Samm Levine (Neal), who all went on to fortuitous acting careers.
