‘Looking Blackward’ Visits Dominion

Dominion High School teachers Steve Hicks and Karen Banks were able to bring a Black History Exhibit to Dominion High School to bring awareness to students of our country’s history.

Jay D. Johnson, the creator of Looking Blackward, said, “We’d like to see that students get an idea of what really happened in our country.” They had a collection of primary sources ranging from segregation signs to KKK outfits and programs that were created by the KKK themselves.

Johnson said, “Its real. It really happened. We want to show the history of how African Americans were treated in our country.” He wants for people to know the adversity that the African Americans had to face, and how they were able to overcome the adversity and hardships that were placed on them by society.

Looking Blackward has set up at a retirement home in Leesburg, colleges in southern Maryland, as well as Loudoun Freedom Center. Although, they have not been invited to another Loudoun County Public School, besides Dominion.
