Bring It Winners Reside in Dominion
Bring It is a talent competition held on December 9th at Reston Bible Church where high school students can showcase their talents for an opportunity to win as an individual or a school group. Both of the Bring It winners, individual and school group, were from Dominion.
The individual winner, Skylar Gutierrez who is a freshman at Dominion, participated and won the individual competition as a beat boxer. He learned to beat box an unusual way. “I basically went outside and met with a stranger, he was an Asian guy, and he taught me three simple beats. That’s how I first learned how to beat box.”
The school group winners are from a group called Stool Pigeon including Bennet Humpton, Clifford Francis, Miles Phillips and Jackson Myers. Lead member Miles Phillips said, “We just use our sticks and our percussion skills to create beats on stools and people seem to like it.”
Gutierrez won one thousand dollars as an individual winner and Stool Pigeon received two thousand dollars, “most of [the money] is going to the band room since we are a school act,” said Stool Pigeon member, Clifford Francis.
Stool Pigeon practiced “practically every day for like a week and a half leading up to the competition, but usually we have relaxed practices when we want them,” Phillips said.
“Usually throughout the weekends I practice on my own little speaker and my microphone. I also make up beats during and after school. It’s not a set practicing thing, I just do it casually” Gutierrez said.
Both Stool Pigeon and Gutierrez agreed that the best thing about competing at Bring It was the wide variety of talent. “It was cool to be able to compete against so many different people with so many different talents” Francis said.
Stool Pigeon unfortunately does not have any scheduled performances or competitions coming up but are “working on some new stuff and we hope to be competing and performing as soon as we can” Phillips said.
Gutierrez is planning on going to the World Beat Boxing Championships in November of 2017 with hopes of a good performance and possibly a win.
