Netflix Pick: Scream

Along with “Orange is the New Black” and “Stranger Things,” another Netflix Original hit called “Scream” might just be accumulating a cult following just like its predecessors. The show was released in 2015 and has since been nominated for the Teen Choice Awards and for the Leo Awards.

The storyline is based upon the 1996 slasher film also entitled “Scream” and follows a group of teenagers who are being targeted by a masked serial killer who is carrying on in the footsteps of the murderer that came 20 years before: Brandon James. The show toys around with the concept of high school stereotypes, allowing it to resemble a bloodier version of “The Breakfast Club.”

One of the show’s specialties is its ability to build suspense. As a drama/ horror series, it plays largely upon unsettling violin music and cliffhangers that practically demand the viewer to begin the next episode immediately.

If a downfall exists within the show, it’s the scripting. Every other phrase said by the characters sounds like their famous last words or something too dramatic to be real. For example, a high school student actually says, “It’s like the killer is combining these two legends into one brand new murder spree. I mean, call me crazy but I think we’re in Freddy vs. Jason territory here.”  However, this minor issue is easily forgotten as the intense plot completely parallels their dramatic reactions.

Overall, “Scream” is an excellent choice for people who have a guilty pleasure for over-dramatized TV and horror flicks. The show is perfect for all those binge-watchers out there and will never fail to leave you guessing.
