Restaurant Review: Rocco’s Pizza

Rocco’s NY Pizza and Subs in Leesburg was recently named the best pizza in the entire state of Virginia by Yelp. With so many pizza options in the area, should Dominion students trust a website to make the trek to Leesburg for a piece of bread with tomato sauce and cheese slathered on top?

Looking at the store from the outside, the exterior isn’t all that welcoming. Once inside of Rocco’s, there are only two tables and a total of four chairs inside the restaurant. However, even with a somewhat dreary appearance, the pizza and friendly staff make up for whatever the restaurant is lacking in design.

When eating a slice of Rocco’s pizza, you’re not getting the run-of-the-mill pizza from a Papa John’s or Pizza Hut. At Rocco’s, a customer gets a quality, homemade pizza. They have mastered the perfect ratio of cheese, crust, and sauce.

On most pizzas, the crust always seems to be a problem. It’s either too soggy, or too tough. It’s too thick, or it’s so thin that the sauce and cheese concave through it. Rocco’s crust is the “just right” option. Its crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just like a crust should be. Not a fan of the typical crust? Rocco’s has you covered with a variety of crust styles, including thin and sesame seed crust.

Going along with variety, Rocco’s has a grand total of 31 toppings and gluten free options to make the perfect customizable pizza for just about anybody. Along with pizza, Rocco’s also serves typical Italian cuisine such as an assortment of calzones, wraps, subs, strombolis, and pastas.

All in all, Rocco’s Pizza didn’t take the plate for the absolute best pizza ever, but it was pretty good. Maybe having the title of best pizza in Virginia hinders Rocco’s success. The expectations are unrealistic and if you’re at the top, the only way you can go is down. A piece of advice- if you ever find yourself in Leesburg, make sure to stop by Rocco’s, but don’t go out of your way for a slice of pizza that is equal to any other slice from a specialty pizza sho
