College Football Rewind and Picks of the Week

Week 1 Rewind

Last Saturday was projected to be the greatest opening Saturday (and weekend) in the history of College football, and it was. Two top five teams lost in stunners: #3 Oklahoma got dominated by #15 Houston’s power offense, and Wisconsin pulled off the upset over #5 ranked LSU in a defensive battle.

Other key losses included #10 Notre Dame losing in possibly the best game of the weekend, and #16 UCLA getting upset in overtime. High scoring games, ranked teams falling, and non-stop action filled the weekend which is all we can ask for as college football fans.

In more surprising news, the SEC, which is supposedly college football’s most dominant conference, went a poor 7-7 on the weekend, with Alabama looking like the only team in that conference that could win a playoff spot. The Big 10 looked dominant, but the talent across the top tier teams of that conference are going to beat each other up throughout the regular season, and the Big 12 and ACC top candidates Oklahoma and Clemson, didn’t look like playoff teams either (especially Oklahoma). So with this season presents one thing to all fans: uncertainty.  Each week is going to be important for every team as another week of College Football rolls on.

Best Games for Week 2

After the first week of incredible matchups, this Saturday’s slate of games cools down a bit as most teams are facing off against out of conference teams they are expected to blow out, but here are the best of the bunch.

Penn State vs PITT 12:00 pm ESPN

Both of these teams won their first game of the year, both looking to get a quality win in a battle of two Pennsylvania schools. Penn State is starting Red-Shirt Freshman Trace McSorley, Briar Woods graduate, who is unexperienced with a lot of talent, while PITT has depth at running back and has an elite starter in James Connor. It’s going to be another battle up front.

Penn State wins a low scorer 13-10

Arkansas vs #14 TCU 7:00 pm ESPN

Arkansas comes into this game looking to get a good win for their resume and the SEC’s. TCU has a fast, West-Coast offense, but their defense can’t play with the best of them as they won a close one against South Dakota State. I think Arkansas will run the ball, control the tempo, and slow TCU’s offense down.

Arkansas wins 20-17

Virginia Tech vs #17 Tennessee 8:00 pm ABC

College Gameday is going down to Bristol, Connecticut, to watch two talented teams during primetime. Tennessee was a SEC contender going into the season, but barely survived an upset against Appalachian State, while looking sloppy all around. I think if what they looked like last week is any indication to what this season holds, they are in trouble. Virginia Tech on the other hand is in a rebuilding year after the leave of their long-time head coach Frank Beamer. This VT offense can still put up points on the board, but can their defense contain Josh Dobbs and the Tennessee attack?

Tennessee avoids another upset 34-27
