Rivalry Resumes Tonight at 7
The Titans look for their first ever 2-0 start against crosstown rival Potomac Falls.
Records don’t matter, districts don’t matter, only winning matters. When it comes to rivalries, pride, and bragging rights, tonight’s 7 p.m. tilt with Potomac Falls is as big as it gets. Not to mention the other factors of setting a school record and taking another step towards the playoffs.
With a chance for the first ever 2-0 start, the Titans will look to continue what Broad Run started last week against the Panthers and that is run, run, run. The Panthers surrendered over 300 yards rushing last week in the win over the Spartans. Dominion will look to do more of the same. Vashon McCants and Jayson Robinson combined for 130 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Titans’ opening night win.
“He’s electric. He can take over the game,” said Coach Buckwalter about what the Virginia Academy transfer McCants brings to the game. The fact that he is talented on both sides of the ball makes him a player to watch every play of the game.
McCants did it all the opening night, including throwing the lone touchdown pass in the 38-13 win over the Black Knights. The leading passer was Tyrell Eskridge with 79 yards. “We will continue to have both ready to go,” said Coach Buckwalter referring to Eskridge and Thomas Jarman.
Starting the season 2-0 will help to establish early season power points which is what kept the Titans from the playoffs last night. “It’s huge becuae Potomac Falls will win a bunch of games and will enhance our chances greatly,” Coach Buckwalter said.
“I don’t want to say it is the most important game of the year but it is definitely a game of pride, winning our community over,” said Tommy Christ who is a verbal commit to UVA.
On the front of the team’s spirit wear is 11:30 which has a double meaning. Coach Buckwalter talked about how he is defensive minded and it is 11 players to the ball, 3 and out. It is also the “birthday” in that November 30th last year the team began their quest for the playoffs after finishing just 0.03 points away from it.
One big difference this year is the team buying in from the first day. “It is all about 0.03, how close we were to making the playoffs but didn’t because of little mistakes,” Christ said. That tough start included a 7-6 loss to the Panthers.
“Our kids believe more in our offense and what we are doing. They have embraced what we are running,” said Coach Buckwalter about the way the players have entered the early part of the season.
The Panthers are coming off of a 2nd round playoff trip last year and their 16-10 win over the Spartans should get everyone’s attention. Look for the Panthers to run as well as they only attempted 7 passes last week. Senior running back Kash Jackson is a player to keep your eye on as he carried 12 times for 113 yards and their lone touchdown.
