Going Once… Going Twice

Going+Once...+Going+Twice

In 2012, George Zimmerman shot Florida teen Trayvon Martin. That day left a mark on our country, starting up a movement that has rocked us all to the core. Today, some still feel the same sorrow and grief whenever his name is uttered. That could explain why many people reacted so poorly when George Zimmerman decided to auction off the very gun that shot and killed the seventeen year old on the United Gun Group website.

Zimmerman says that he is a free American and that he has the right to sell the gun, but that didn’t stop people from responding in their own, albeit tasteless, way. For instance, the highest bidder for a small bid of $65 million dollars was ‘Racist McShootface’. Another bid was placed by a ‘Tamir Rice’, the name of the twelve-year-old boy who was shot in 2014 by police officers in Cleveland, Ohio. Both bidders were taken down by the auction site.

One serious bidder, Brez Morrell, came to Zimmerman’s defense, stating that since the man was acquitted, he had done nothing wrong.

Zimmerman had tried to sell the firearm before, but the auction house refused to sell it. They believed having a gun with such a heavy background would bring unwanted publicity to the site. The current site holding the auction stresses that the selling of the gun has nothing to do with what happened and that it is just about business.

The auction was taken down due to the many fake bidders, but Zimmerman placed the gun up again soon after. As of Monday May 16, there are no bids for the gun.
