A New Face for Currency

Over the past few years, the US Department of Treasury has been bringing up the idea that there may be a new face to the ten dollar bill. This would not be another old, white man, but a significant woman from our history. However, recent developments have made the plan change course.

“Hamilton”: a new Broadway musical about the Founding Father and major contributor to the U.S. Constitution. The musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda has taken the whole world by storm, resulting in a current two year wait for any sort of ticket. After the sudden rise in popularity about the Founding Father, the discussion about changing the face of the bill took an interesting turn, making people question whether or not this would be a good idea. Should they really change the ten dollar bill at this time? The Department of Treasury decided no, they would not get rid of Hamilton from the ten dollar bill just yet, but they will change the face of another figure from history: Andrew Jackson.

Former President Jackson is known today for being a part in the first election where the common man could vote, but he also played a role in the Trail of Tears, which caused five tribes of Native Americans to be slaughtered. Replacing him with Harriet Tubman, a woman who dedicated her life to stop slave-owning murderers, seems fitting.

Tubman served as a member of the “underground railroad”, a nurse in the Civil War, as well as a spy in the same war. In 1863, she led Union soldiers in the Combahee River Raid, which freed over seven hundred slaves. To have such a brave, honorable person be the first woman on such a highly valued piece of currency is an incredible opportunity the United States. The current release date for the bill is in the year 2020.
