X-Files Reboot

Reboots. They’re out there Scully. The classic 90’s hit TV Show, The X-Files– lasting 9 seasons and spawning 2 movies and a spinoff, The Lone Gunmen—is getting a 6 episode reboot with the beloved Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, along with other recurring characters from its 1994-2002 run. FOX is bringing back the 90’s classic in January 2016.

The show is about two FBI agents, the believer: Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and the skeptic: Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). The pair work on The X Files, which is where all of the FBI’s unexplained cases or phenomena end up, Bigfoot, Chupacabra, A fluke-man, and of course, Aliens. Aided by conspiracy theorists, fellow FBI agents, and more, the partners travel all across North America chasing after the truth and battling a cigarette-smoking man on more than a few occasions.

Fox announced the 10th season back in March and showed the premier episode at New York Comic Con last month. Shooting started back in June in Vancouver. The majority of the original 9 seasons was shot in Vancouver, Canada as well.  The show was a start for quite a few well known people now, including Vince Gilligan, who wrote 30 episodes back in the 90’s; including Emmy winning “Memento mori” in which it is revealed that Scully has a cancerous tumor and the two agents investigate and meet other women with the same mysterious growth, who not only say they were abducted by aliens, but were on the ship with Dana. The episode won Gillian Anderson an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. So what do we know about the new season?

Well for one, Gillian Anderson – who plays female protagonist Dana Scully – has said it is “”intense”. Series creator Chris Carter has been quoted saying, “We’re not going to reboot any of the old favorites, although it was something we all thought about. These are all brand new stories. We hope to scare you in brand new ways.” Carter has also mentioned the 9/11 attacks saying that the show ended shortly afterwards, in 2002, and a lot has happened since then, such as the Patriot act, the NSA spying on American citizens and whistle-blowers coming out of the woodwork with proof that the government has been lying to you, which for a show about how the government is lying to you, is pretty big. Series lead actor David Duchovny has said his character, Special Agent Fox Mulder, “is in a dark, dark place.”

New to the series will be guest stars and modern actors, such as Joel McHale, Robbie Amell, and Lauren Ambrose. So how will these interesting new story elements, characters, and political shifts in the county affect what many would agree to be one of the best sci-fi dramas to air in the US? We have to wait until January 24th, 2016 to find out.
